- Curator Comment:
- ‘The Thames: from Oxford to the Tower’, by William Senior with etchings by F. S. Walker, was produced as a limited edition publication of 310 copies. The lover of the Thames could not visit it in better company than that of the two authors of this book. Mr. Senior has composed a letterpress which is, "without eerflowing, full" of historic and artistic guidance, while he adds a special acquaintance with the river in its practical aspects…[t]he etchings are beautiful…,’ The Spectator, January 3rd, 1891
- Note on artwork:
- Meath-born F.S. Walker provided 30 etchings for this volume. Each plate was printed on hand-made paper and inserted individually between the typeset pages. Each image is topographically correct. Walker, as follower of J. A. McNeill Whistler, studied each aspect from life. His intention was to create atmospheric works of great detail to appeal to reader. In these serene images of London’s river, Walker employs great variety in his mark making and applies varying densities of etching to the plate. This image has the Tower of London in the distance overlooking the river.
