Curator Comment:
This volume of 'Songs from Robert Burns' was edited by A.E. Coppard for the Golden Cockerel Press in 1925. Annesley’s illustrations for the publication are among her most regarded. Reflecting the ethos of the Robert Gibbings-led GCP, as an illustrator Annesley involved herself fully in the image-creating process, both technically and in her subjective interpretation the text.
Note on artwork:
Annesley executed her designs for Burn's text in her signature expressive manner. Her mark- making of the wood block is varied, creating a richly textured effect, with black and white elements carefully balanced. In this endearing image, a young sheep addresses the viewer directly, its setting is a rolling patterned landscape.
