Curator Comment:
This is a page from 'The Book of Saint Ultan'. The publication was edited by Katherine MacCormack and produced by Colm O’Lochlainn’s Candle Press as a fundraising project. It was sold for the benefit of Saint Ultan's Hospital, which was established in 1919 to address the medical needs of working class mothers and children in Dublin. Many Irish writers and artists, including George Russell (AE), Harry Clarke, Jack Yeats and Beatrice Elvery (responsible for image here) contributed to the volume.
Note on artwork:
The page on view has text and images by the book’s editor, Katherine MacCormack. As an example of Arts and Crafts publishing in Ireland, the bold graphics, combined with the sensitive typesetting, creates an aesthetically pleasing composition.
