- Note on artwork:
- This illustration depicts the ruins of Baldongan Castle and church in Skerries, County Dublin. The castle was constructed in the 13th century and the church was later added in the 15th century. The church and castle were subjected to devastating attack in 1642. The subject is treated in a monumental and romanticised manner; the remaining structures tower over a lone figure and the representation of bright light breaking through the parting clouds creates a dramatic backdrop. The range of tone and texture reveals the mastery of the engraver, Thomas Higham.
