The illustrations created by Barton closely relate to the descriptive text by Frances A. Gerard.
Note on artwork:
Though reproduced in black white, the textural qualities of Barton's watercolour technique are clearly visible. The subject matter is not carefully drawn but rather areas are blocked out originally in colour - the effect is atmospheric, with tonal/textural effects defining form. The area is one of the most architecturally significant in the city and silhouette of John Henry Foley's statue of Henry Grattan dominates the image.
