Curator Comment:
In 1916 George Harrap commissioned Harry Clarke to produce a series of illustrations for an English edition of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Fairy Tales’. Clarke produced 16 full-colour and 24 black and white illustrations for the volume. This project established Clarke’s reputation internationally as a book illustrator.
Note on artwork:
One of 16 full page colour illustrations for 'Fairy-Tales', 'The Storks' is among the least worked-up of Clarke's designs. The background sky of azure blue dominates the composition. The elegant forms of the birds punctuate the design and a reduced, stylised landscape lies below.
