Curator Comment:
Barton, as author and illustrator, relates the imagery closely to the descriptive text. The owner of original watercolour, at the time of publication, was Sir George Brooke. An officer in the Irish Guards, he died in WWI.
Note on artwork:
Here Barton has included an image of an old coaching inn in Holborn, which was pulled down in 1898. At this time, there was considerable debate and nostalgia surrounding a number of London’s old buildings and historic areas that were being demolished to be replaced by modern structures.
