Curator Comment:
Barton, as author and illustrator, relates the imagery closely to the descriptive text. The owner of original watercolour, at the time of publication, was philanthropist and art collector, Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh.
Note on artwork:
Barton creates a dramatic night scene of silhouetted forms on central London's Tottenham Court Road, including an occupied horse-drawn omnibus. As in a number of 'Familiar London' illustrations, it is raining which allows the artist to observe and record lighting effects and reflective surfaces, such as the wet street.
