- Curator Comment:
- Barton, as author and illustrator, relates the imagery closely to the descriptive text. The owner of original watercolour, at the time of publication, was the 4th Earl of Cadogan, Frederick William Cadogan, barrister and a Member of Parliament in the 1860s and 70s.
- Note on artwork:
- In this image, Barton depicts a working class family on a rest day. In the background is Battersea Bridge and in her written account Barton describes the popularity of the local leisure park and how it attracts families with young children. Perhaps somewhat sentimental in tone, the artist endeavours to capture the closeness and affectation of the couple and their child.
