Note on artwork:
One of several works where Barton recreates the damp, foggy atmosphere associated with London. In this scene, figures, carriages and distant lights emerge from the haze, as a gas-lighter tends to a streetlamp along the banks of the Thames. The artist wonderfully captures the detail of reflected lights on the rain-soaked pavements below.
