Curator Comment:
Barton, as author and illustrator, relates the imagery closely to the descriptive text. The owner of original watercolour was philanthropist and art collector, Edward Cecil Guinness, 1st Earl of Iveagh.
Note on artwork:
In this closely observed gathering of figures from all walks of life, Barton records how crowds converged outside newspaper offices to find out the results of national elections. Sheets with poll results are shown pasted on the facade of the 'Daily Graphic' building. Barton's fluid, sketchy technique of painting evokes a sense of the movement, noise and energy that would have marked the occasion.
