Curator Comment:
Barton, as author and illustrator, relates the imagery closely to the descriptive text. The original watercolour was the possession of H.R.H. The Princess of Wales, later Queen Mary.
Note on artwork:
In this reproduction from a charming watercolour by Barton, the child, His Royal Highness Prince George of Wales, looks on a parading unit of the Scots Guards from the balcony of Marlborough House. Impressionistic in style, the artist delights in recreating the effects of dappled light in the foreground of the image.
