- Curator Comment:
- The theme of the poem, 'Le grenier de Beranger' ('Beranger's garret'), is the writer's regret at the loss of the hopes and simple pleasures of his joyful youth. The composition derives from depictions of the supper at Emmaus and from seventeenth-century genre paintings. These images are sourced from an edition - (of which there were many) - from 1875, publishers were George Bell & Sons.
- Note on artwork:
- In an interior a group of figures gather around a table to drink wine and amuse themselves. From a concealed source, the play of light creates highlights and shadows.
