- Curator Comment:
- Nicholl was prolific illustrator who was involved with many projects of high importance. Each story in the collection is headed by a vignette illustration. The illustration is from the 'new and complete' edition by T. Wright, London, 1882. The first edition appeared in two volumes in 1828 and in many subsequent editions. This is possibly by Nicholl and engraved by Whymper, but unlike other illustrations in the book it bears no names.
- Note on artwork:
- With a vigorous hurling match taking place behind them, two barefoot boys relax in the foreground, one lying with his back to the viewer, the other standing above him, facing forwards.
