Curator Comment:
'St Ronan's Well' (1824) is one of Scott's Waverley novels and the only one set in the nineteenth century.
Note on artwork:
In an interior an angry young man, his fists clenched, looms over a young woman who recoils on a sofa. This moment of intense drama shows John Mowbray threatening to kill his sister, Clara, if she does not comply with his devious plan.
