'St Ronan's Well' (1824) is one of Scott's Waverley novels and the only one set in the nineteenth century.
Note on artwork:
In a clearing in a forest, Lord Etherington lies mortally wounded after a duel with John Mowbray. His challenger, the smoking pistol in his hand looks on as Mowbray's companions comfort their expiring friend.
