Note on artwork:
The Irish nationalist leader, Daniel O'Connell, is shown in brown frock-coat and green tie, standing in a characteristic pose leaning gently on a draped pedestal. The composition is shown as if it were a small commemorative porcelain figure - indeed the image is directly based on such a Staffordshire figure. The text is based on stories told to Lady Gregory and a great deal of space is devoted to O'Connell.
