This is one of very many editions of Goldsmith's poem, first published in 1770. It remained popular throughout the nineteenth century and a number if illustrated editions were published.
Note on artwork:
Front cover illustration, a rustic scene in a gentle landscape with sheep and a young shepherd boy in the foreground waving to two women located in the middle ground, a village beyond. The costumes are intended to evoke the eighteenth-century date of the poem. A tree with slender trunk and branches rises behind the boy, providing a frame for the title and author's name. The image is printed in two colours, light green and light brown.
