- Curator Comment:
- This edition of ‘Íosagán agus sgéalta eile agus dánta’ by Patrick Pearse (1879-1916), was printed in 1918, two years after his execution by the British authorities for his leadership of the 1916 Irish Rebellion. The edition was published by Connradh na Gaedhilge, the organisation founded by Douglas Hyde in 1893 to promote the Irish language. Pearse had been a member of the organisation from the 1890s.
- Note on artwork:
- Beatrice Elvery (1881-1970) was a student of William Orpen at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin. Throughout her early career she worked in a number of disciplines including stained glass and illustration. She illustrated a number of important examples of Irish revivalist literature including this publication and she worked as in illustrator with the Cuala Press on occasion. Her signature style is bold, linear and descriptive. In this cover image for ‘Íosagán’, Elvery describes the Christ-child in a fluid graphic manner, the figure set illusionistically within a window-like frame.
