- 'The Vicar of Wakefield' was first published in 1766, and maintained its popularity throughout the 1800s. William Mulready was commissioned to illustrate Goldsmith's text in the 1840s, producing 32 drawings, one for each chapter head, various editions with Mulready's illustrations followed.
