In 1857, the publisher Edward Moxon collated an illustrated collection of Tennyson's poetry for which a number of artists drew illustrations, including the Pre-Raphaelites William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This publication, a very popular ‘gift book’, became the benchmark for British illustration.
