Orpen, William

view gallery

Biography: Painter of genre scenes and portraits, Orpen was successful in both Ireland and Britain although it was in the latter that he worked most extensively. Orpen was encouraged by Sean Keating, who he assisted. His role as a war artist gave rise the volume, An onlooker in France, from which the illustration comes. There are three editions of that work, the most recent edited by Robert Upstone, London, 2010.
