view galleryBiography: Nicholl, 1804-86, prolific landscape painter in watercolour and draughtsman. Nicholl contributed illustrations to the Dublin Penny Journal in the 1830s and to S.C and A.M. Halls' Ireland (1843-5). He spent more than one lengthy period in London and was from 1846-9 a teacher of landscape painting, scientific drawing and design at the Colombo Academy in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). He illustrated Ceylon (1859) by his patron, Sir James Emerson Tennent of Tempo, Co. Fermanagh.
