view galleryBiography: George Petrie (1789-1866) Irish antiquary, archaeologist, architectural historian, artist, editor, musicologist and writer. Initially active as a watercolourist and supplier of illustrations, Petrie was later a pioneering figure in Irish antiquarianism somewhat facilitated by the period spent working in the topographical department of the Irish Ordnance Survey. He was closely connected with the Royal Irish Academy and was president of the Royal Hibernian Academy, 1857-9.
