Biography: The painter John Lavery, 1856-1935, was born in Belfast and was later associated with Glasgow. He enjoyed a cosmopolitan career. He was especially sought after as a portraitist although he painted landscape and subject pictures such as those he produced as an official war artist for reproduction in British publications in support of the war effort. His portraits include a large group, divided between the Ulster Museum, Belfast, and the Dublin City Gallery, the Hugh Lane, depicting notable figures in Anglo-Irish politics around the time of Independence.
